Conclusion

Vietnam was Australia’s longest war, and among its most divisive and controversial. Experience in South Vietnam had again emphasized the light infantry role within the Australian Army; had introduced it to various technologies not available to it before 1966, such as helicopter gunships and troop transports; and had allowed it to relearn some old lessons from earlier conflicts, such as the utility of tanks in the infantry support role in close jungle terrain. The commitment to Phuoc Tuy required an unparalleled peacetime expansion of the Army, one which was not maintained for long after the commitment ended and national service was suspended. The professionalism and skills of the three services were again confirmed, while institutionally the Australian Army emerged intact, with none of the drug, race, and discipline problems that wracked the US services. The Australian Task Force had come to dominate its area of operations in Phuoc Tuy province, but this alone could not ensure a long-term result favorable to the South Vietnamese government or American aims in the country.
